I read the Story of Princess Hase. A price was married to a princess since the time they were super young. They were happy though. One area that was causing them sadness however was the fact that they had no children over the years. They really wished they had a kid. They wanted to care for the child and grow old with the child. They made a pilgrimage in order to try to get a kid. In their religion, if they go to this pilgrimage, they will have a child. They went to it, and it worked. They had a child, a daughter. The mother of the daughter died when the girl was only 5 years old. The mother told her daughter to be good. She gave her a  messages that it is okay if her father remarries. The prince married again. This time, the woman was awful. The daughter was good to her like her mom said. The emperor wanted the daughter and now her step mom to play a song, and the step mom could not. Thus, she was jealous the daughter was able to. She had a son, but the emperor loved the daughter. She tried to poison her. She accidentally poisoned her own kid. The child died. The daughter had to recite a poem that could save the emperor. The stepmother was very jealous. She asked a servant to kill her. The servant knew she was good, so he protected her. The father found the girl and servants.  The servant was given the highest position. The mother was no longer a problem. He had no heir, so he adopted a guy. This guy married his daughter, and they essentially lived happily ever after. I would use this story but make it more of a backstory that this step mother even killed the first wife could be interesting.
